Manchester is famous for lots of great things but there is a darker, criminal side to this area that threatens businesses every day. According to GM Police Stats, there wereover 780 incidents of knife crimeand around 7500 instances of reported burglary in the first three months of 2019 alone, going to prove that there is a lot of work to be done! If you are based here, then you need to think about getting the right security services to ensure that your business is covered 24/7.

1 – Fallowfield (Total Number of Crimes This Year: 3511 Area Population: 15211)

Labelled as the student area of Manchester, Fallowfield has been deemed to be one of the most high-crime areas for many years with the 1818 of the crimes reported being categorised as violent crime, anti-social behaviour or burglary.

Many businesses in this area make their money from the local student population who have repeatedly demanded action in improving the safety of the area. Many businesses suffer at the hands of anti-social behaviour, and the crime rates are not reducing.

2 – Gorton (Total Number of Crimes This Year: 8984 Area Population: 36055)

Gorton’s history of crime has made it a less attractive place for people to open a new business, but more recently the area has had an injection of cash and new homes have been built in an attempt to clean the area up.

However, the most commonly reported crime in this area is violent crime with 2628 cases, which accounts for over a quarter of all crimes reported in the area. Anti-social behaviour and criminal damage are the next most concerning crimes in the area with 2026 cases, and businesses and local police are working together with security services to find a way forward.

3 – Clayton (Total Number of Crimes This Year: 3263 Area Population: 16141)

Clayton is an area that you may be shocked to see on this list after a considerable amount of regeneration work was done back in 2002 before the Commonwealth Games. However, most recently, there has been a spike in the rate of knife and violent crime in this area with a total of 969cases reported, making both residents and business owners questions their safety.

There has also been a rise in the level of anti-social behaviour seen in this area with 537 cases reported. When you consider that nearly one half of all crime reported in this area is listed a violent or anti-social, it is certainly one area to watch out for.

4 – Longsight(Total Number of Crimes This Year: 2981 Area Population: 15429)

Longsight is one of those areas that has been renowned for crime and anti-social behaviour over the years. There is a high level of deprivation in the area, and there are lots of gang-related crimes reported daily.

The most commonly reported crime is violent crime with 736 incidents, followed very closely by burglary with 499 incidents, meaning that many businesses find themselves in an incredibly vulnerable position daily. There are also ongoing concerns around criminal damage and arson, leaving business owners worried about whether their premises are safe when they are away from them.

5 – Moss Side (Total Number of Crimes This Year: 3262 Area Population: 18902)

Moss Side is one of the most famous places in Manchester for high crime rates. It is not uncommon to hear of shootings or violent, gang-related crime and many young people find themselves being sucked into a negative cycle of crime fuelled behaviour.

There has been a lot done to try and change the area, but there is still a high crime rate being reported each year with 958 crimes being attributes to violence and 569 to anti-social behaviour. However, there does appear to be a light at the end of the tunnel with more work being done by local security firms and law enforcement.
